Wednesday I had a phone conversation with someone in Los Angeles (note I am in the midwest)! I connected with them as part of this phone banking tool on the mybarackobama.com site for the Canvass on Saturday.

This young mom with young kids was excited and charged up for Barack Obama! We spent 30 minutes chatting (yes longer than should have). But in the end she was willing to share her talents as a spanish translator to the campaign in addition to helping canvass this Saturday.

I am glad I had that conversation. It reinforces my belief that I support the right candidate and that this phone banking can and does do more than encourage people but GETS them involved.

And this personal outreach was all it took.

Tomorrow I am hitting the ground to canvass locally and next week the mobile phone banking is coming to town!

The mobile phone initiative has been successful enough here that the campaign is doing them again. For us -the campaign supplies a cell phone, arranges for space, and gives us scripts and names and numbers of people to call. Along with an area to note responses. The spaces have been democratic offices, homes, to college campuses. If we have a student organization on campus they may allow the space to be used.

It can work! The last one we did had around 25 people making approx. 900 calls for an event in Iowa. Was it worth it? It was for a senior town hall meeting. Barack Obama got a standing ovation.

But in the meantime with the help of some free time, this tool, and the joys of VOIP (Vonage phone service and I LOVE IT by the way) I am doing what I can....

to make more personal connections.
